Small Groups 101: Support Teams

Every church should have a cycle: People gather together to find gospel rest, so they can go out and bring renewal to a broken world. A rhythm where the church gathers together in order to minister to people, then the church scatters out as salt and light in the world. 

So who does “ministering” together look like? Who ministers? Who helps people find gospel rest? Who is “the church”? Well, it’s all of us!! The bible says that all believers are to mutually encourage one another and build one another up. (1 Thess 5) and that we should all be equipped for the work of ministry to build up the body of Christ (Ephesians 4). Part of being a member of a church is serving each other, and supporting the ministries of the church.

The church is referred to as the body of Christ, and each person in the church is a member of that body (Rom 12, 1 Cor 12). The only way the body to functions well is if we are all serving as our “part” (i.e. eyes and ears are like teaching and serving, etc.)

At Waypoint Church, we call these serving opportunities “Support Teams.” They are “teams” because we serve together. We need each other to serve in different ways, side-by-side to make the work sustainable, and they are “support” teams because they support and enable the gospel ministries of the church.

The goal:

Serve once a month on a support team, and everyone pitch in with nursery.
